Lynbrook Library Research Resources
Our Library Print and eBook Catalog
The LHS library catalog, also called the Destiny catalog, is online. This means students can access it from school or home, wherever there is a network connection.
There is no login required to search the library catalog. However, when students log into the LHS Library Catalog/Destiny (by clicking on FUHSD Google sign in), they can do the following:
- Track which library and textbooks are checked out to them.
- Save searches.
- Check out eBooks & audiobooks (Sora, EBSCO eBooks, Gale eBooks).
- Renew books
- Place holds on books
DIGITAL RESOURCES
DATABASES & EBOOKS
Students have access to a variety of nonfiction research materials at LHS. We have database subscriptions for journal and news articles and reviews, and we have eBook databases, which extend our print collection. Our digital nonfiction/reference collection is larger than our print collection.
Students are able to login to our databases from school or home. To login from home, students must use the correct usernames and passwords. These are located below the icon grid on the Library page in the section titled "How to access databases from school & home"
The Lynbrook Library Research Site is another useful tool for students. Help can be found for all aspects of research, including help with citation tools and effective database searching.
Online Research Tools
Turnitin is an online submission tool teachers use to help promote academic integrity.
Students will mostly access turnitin.com through Schoology, but can also access outside the learning management system with their FUHSD Google login username (FUHSD email address & password combo). PLEASE FOLLOW YOUR TEACHER'S INSTRUCTIONS WHEN USING THIS TOOL TO SUBMIT ASSIGNMENTS!
Many students already have accounts from other schools when they start at LHS, but these student accounts are regularly deleted from old schools (not the papers, just the accounts-- all papers form part of the Turnitin database). It's extremely important to understand that your LHS Turnitin account is used exclusively at LHS, and you need to use your FUHSD email address to login and that account to enroll in classes.
Students should use the Manuals and Support links for assistance, or click the links below to get help with the following:
NoodleTools is an online automatic citation creator, a note keeper, and outline creator that many English teachers use. For assistance with this tool, please email lhs_tech_help@fuhsd.org

Schoology: online courses, groups, messaging system
FUHSD uses Schoology (School - o - jee) for our Learning Management System.
With Schoology, students can digitally submit homework assignments, review grades, participate in interactive discussions, receive announcements and feedback, take tests, message instructors, and more.
Students & Parents have access to Schoology Training. Students receive their training during the first days of school; parents can access training through the panels below this content, and will find the same training in the course dashboard once they've logged into Schoology.
Students are automatically enrolled and will use their FUHSD Google Login via the Schoology link in the student portal.
Parents are automatically enrolled, but are issued unique passwords. These unique passwords will be mailed to you near the beginning of the school year.
We set up your account with the email address you provided to us in Infinite Campus.
Please note that parent passwords cannot be reset. Clicking "Forgot Password" does not allow you to reset your password. If you have misplaced the email that contained your login instructions (sent at the beginning of the school year - August 4th, from Denae Nurnberg), please contact lhs_tech_help@fuhsd.org

Welcome to Schoology
Teachers use Schoology to post classroom materials online, provide a safe forum for students to discuss their ideas and collaborate on projects and to assign and collect homework electronically. It helps students stay organized and it keeps the class connected.
A Schoology Parent Account gives you access to:
- The classes your child is enrolled in.
- Your child’s upcoming assignments.
- School and class announcements.
Schoology makes it easy for parents to stay involved in their children’s education.
Schoology Home Page: Your account & Your child's account
Having a Parent account in Schoology is actually like having two accounts:
- Your personal account, with your own name and information;
- Your Child Activity view. From here, you can view Schoology from your child’s perspective, and see what he or she sees, and receive updates about his or her activity.
Start by clicking on the arrow in the upper-right corner, next to your name, and then select your child’s name to switch into his or her account. The check mark in this drop-down menu indicates which account you are currently viewing.
Student Activity View vs. Your Activity View
Student Activity View
Viewing Your Child’s Activity
Click on the arrow in the upper-right corner of your account and select your child’s name to view his or her activity.
From the home page, you can quickly view specific information about your child’s Schoology activity:
- The Student Activity area in the center of the page displays your child’s recent submission and grade information.
- Toggle into Enrollments in the same area to see a list of the courses your child is currently enrolled in, along with his or her grade. If the teacher or administrator has chosen not to display the grade while the course is in progress, you will see a blank value (as in the grade column above). Click on an individual course to see grades received on assignments, tests, and discussions from that course. Depending on the permission settings in place at your school, you may not be able to view content posted by other members of the course.
- The Recent Grades area lists graded assignments, tests/quizzes, and discussions for the student. To view the graded items, click the item you'd like to view.
- The Overdue section displays a list of course materials your child did not turn in by the due date.
- The Upcoming section displays a list of your child’s upcoming assignments and events.
- Courses: You can see a list of your child’s current courses. Click the course name to navigate to the course profile as your child views it. Depending on the permission settings in place at your school, you may not be able to view content posted by other members of the course.

Promoting Healthy Online Habits for Families
Over the last two years, the delivery of education at Lynbrook (and nationally) has dramatically shifted to include more technology. Although this was initially due to the pandemic and the emergency shift to online learning, teachers and students found that many of the online tools enhanced the learning process. In addition, Lynbrook aims to help students develop college and career ready skills essential for the 21st century.
Learning to use technology appropriately and to monitor oneself can be a challenge for students and families. As students become older, they are expected to be more independent and our hope is to partner with parents/guardians to help foster responsibility and independence in students. Below are some suggestions for helping to ensure responsible use of technology at home.
General Guidelines for all Families
- Setting boundaries - It is important to have a conversation with your student(s) to establish boundaries. Clearly state expectations on the amount of time a student may use a device, websites that are off-limits, and the time students are expected to shut down devices. If a student is working in the bedroom, we recommend that the bedroom door be kept open for monitoring (regardless of student age).
- Listen to student concern(s) - Once you convey your expectations, allow your student to ask questions and express concerns. If your student is concerned about not being able to complete work, ask him/her to estimate the amount of time they believe they might need. In a recent Lynbrook student wellness survey, the large majority of students reported that completing school tasks is taking longer than they expected. In addition, a large number of students reported that they have trouble concentrating on school tasks. This aligns with early research on the fallout from the pandemic and returning to routines.
- Estimating time for work - This can be a challenge for students and parents as homework is not consistent. Keep in mind that not all assignments are online assignments. Many teachers are using textbooks, worksheets, and supplemental materials that are printed. If your student seems to be spending an excessive amount of time online, it may be that they are not using the time for homework. You can always check Schoology to see what has been assigned or email teachers to clarify the work expectations. For assistance with Schoology, visit this tech help page.
- Break up work time - Parents/guardians should remind students to take a break. For example, work for 30 minutes and then take a 5 minute break, away from the device. If your student is not good at taking breaks, interrupt their screen time by asking them to complete a task, such as taking out the garbage or walking the dog.
Tips to utilize if you suspect a concern
- Limit screen time - If your student is using more screen time than you agreed upon, know that you can take action. On some smart phones, you can establish family settings and set limits on various apps.
- Wifi control - Parents/guardians should turn off the house wifi in the evening. Consistently turning off the wifi at the time established for device shut down will let your student know that he/she must complete work earlier in the day.
- Move workspace - Students do not need to be completing work in the bedroom (and not with a closed door). Move the workspace to a general location in the house that is not private.
- Formalize your agreement - If verbally establishing boundaries was not effective, write an agreement that clearly states expectations on total amount of time allowed at home and time expected to shut down devices. The agreement should include consequences for the student if the agreement is broken and should be signed by parents and students. For example, if the student stays up late on his/her devices, you might say that devices will be collected at xxx time in the evening (remember that you own the devices, not your student). If a student is not completing work given the time allotted, perhaps they lose their phone for a day.
- Browser history - While we know that some kids erase their browser history or use incognito windows, check the browser history to try to identify websites that are being visited.
Additional Information and resources
- Nurturing Digitally Resilient Teens in Uncertain Times - A recording of a FUHSD webinar for parents presented by My Digital Tat2, which covered how students use various technology apps.
- Common Sense Media - Parents/guardians can use this site to check reviews and ratings of movies, games and apps to help identify appropriateness for your student age group.
- Circle by Disney - to better manage device use for all devices and websites, parents can consider an external program to help implement technology rules. A service like this may help to avoid student to parent conflict. Circle by Disney is just one example.
- Tech and Your Brain - the LHS mental health team developed a lesson called Tech and Your Brain to help students understand the effect that technology and social media has on our brain. This lesson was implemented in homeroom on Oct 19, 2021. Many homeroom activities can be found in Schoology in the Guidance Class of 20XX folder and accessed by parents, in addition to students.
- How parents manage teens’ digital technology use - research conducted by the Pew Research Center on parents’ experiences with monitoring technology use in teens.
- Video Game Addiction - while playing video games online is not harmful in general, some students may develop a dependency or addiction to gaming. WebMD has provided some symptoms/warning signs to look for along with resources. Like many other addictions, counseling may be needed to help students learn to better manage their gaming.
- How Technology Affects the Human Brain by Sarah Bormann
The FUHSD Technology Use Agreement is a resource for families that provides examples of appropriate and inappropriate use of technology, particularly in school, but can be adapted for home.
