Congratulations to our Lynbrook Seniors who placed in top 300 scholars in the 78th Regeneron Science Talent Search 2019

The Regeneron Science Talent Search scholars hail from 184 American and international high schools in 38 states, the District of Columbia and two countries abroad. The Regeneron Science Talent Search scholars were selected from 1,964 applications, which were received from 601 high schools in 48 states, two U.S. territories and eligible students living in seven other countries. The scholars were selected based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists. The Society for Science & the Public is thrilled to share that Amol Singh, Charles Huang, Shannon Heh, and Stanley Wang have been named top 300 scholars in the 78th Regeneron Science Talent Search—the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and mathematics competition for high school seniors! Mr. Leung asked our scholars to share what influenced them to pursue STEM.

Shannon Heh, Grade 12:  I have loved STEM since I was a child, as I was largely influenced by the Silicon Valley environment and my family’s passion for math and engineering. But it was not until high school where I became involved in scientific research. During the last two summers, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to conduct research under professors—now close mentors—who study environmental sciences and engineering at top universities and who inspired me to pursue my STS science project.

Amol Singh, grade 12:  While conducting research in molecular biology and genetics over the past three years, I have developed a fascination with the hidden but alive molecular world. I had the chance to explore this world with the help of my supportive teachers and the numerous opportunities at Lynbrook. I would like to specifically thank Ms. Loia, Ms. Della Santina, and Mr. Leung for their constant support in my pursuits of science. Through classroom labs and science fairs, I have been able to delve into the intricacies of science and channel my curiosity. The chance to uncover new aspects of the world and improve our daily lives fuels my research.

Charlie Huang, Grade 12:  My pursuit of biology was sparked by the birdwatching I would do as a child. From there, I slowly got interested in bio and became more involved in science competitions. My experiences conducting research in biomaterials science, solid state chemistry, DNA nanotech, and structural biology solidified my goal of pursuing a research career.

Stanley Wang, Grade 12:  I enjoy doing math research because of the critical thinking and logic required to construct a proof. In the future, I'd like to study mathematics and/or computer science.

Congratulations to our Viking Scholars and all the statewide participants!
