The two large mounds to the right will be smoothed down and provide a weed barrier and bit of cushion underneath the artificial grass. For the last two weeks in Homerooms we have been discussing how the Pyramid of Hate describes how biased attitudes, prejudice and hate speech are the seeds of the worst atrocities the world has ever known. Not all hate speech leads to genocide, but all genocide has been fueled by hate speech.
The Pyramid of Hate is an antiracism tool used by the Anti-Defamation League. According to the ADL website,"It was founded in 1913 in response to an escalating climate of anti-Semitism and bigotry. It continues to fight all forms of hate with the same vigor and passion. ADL is a global leader in exposing extremism and delivering anti-bias education, and is a leading organization in training law enforcement. ADL's ultimate goal is a world in which no group or individual suffers from bias, discrimination or hate"
I encourage you to learn more about the Pyramid of Hate from the ADL website. The link will take you to a mini-lesson targeted to teachers.
The links to the slides and script used during Homeroom are here for your reference as well. We provide a script to ensure consistency across classes. Teachers are always invited to improvise as they feel is appropriate for their individual homerooms.
We live in a diverse nation where,according to the US Declaration of Independence, "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Racism and prejudice keep the words of the Declaration of Independence from being realized by all people.
Last week we talked about Biased Attitudes. Biased attitudes are the seeds of hate speech.There is technically no law against hate speech. The first amendment of the US Constitution affords us the freedom of speech, but we need to be careful with that freedom. There may be no law against hateful speech, but that doesn't mean it isn't harmful and bad for society.

Students who use hate speech in a school setting will face disciplinary action because it crosses the line into bullying and harassment. Harassment is behavior that demeans, humiliates or embarrasses a person, and it is clearly offensive by the community social and moral standards. Hate speech is communication that attacks or uses offensive or discriminatory language directed at a person or a group based on their religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, color, descent, gender, or other identity factor.
Hate speech generates (encourages) intolerance and has no place at Lynbrook or the Fremont Union High School District. We value and respect all people and promote equity.
Kindness and respect are invaluable gifts that cost nothing to give. Let's be generous.
