September 4, 2020 Lynbrook Weekly Update Hello, Lynbrook!
Our Vision Lynbrook High School's vision is to create a dynamic environment of respect and achievement where ALL can learn deeply, apply their knowledge and contribute purposefully.
At Lynbrook, ALL means ALL. Because we are committed to ALL, that means we need be open to changing policies that hinder our progress toward our vision. Are there policies that hinder more than help? Are there policies that favor some students over others? We want to ensure that Lynbrook is a place where ALL students feel valued, respected, and encouraged to achieve their goals.
This year, we will be putting together an Equity Task Force. This group will examine data, curriculum, and other policies and practices at Lynbrook. We want to understand what changes we need to make to remove obstacles and dismantle racist systems. This group will be comprised of teachers, administrators, parents, and students.
I am not an expert on anti-racism or systemic racism. I am learning. We all need to learn and to grow together. We need to have courageous uncomfortable conversations about our nation's history and our own biases, prejudices and racist beliefs. We need to give one another grace and patiently walk together. When we fall down, we need to help each other up. We can't give up when it gets hard. This is too important.
Remote Learning Update I had the opportunity to "visit" a few classes this week. Teachers were mixing things up with online assessments, chat questions, class discussions, demonstrations, and Kahoot activities.
The main hub for assignments and grades is Schoology, but there are many online tools that teachers and students are accessing. Not only are students learning new content in their classes, they are learning how to navigate the online school and learn how to use different tools to complete assignments and turn in their work. Teachers are learning the systems, too.
The grade book in Schoology is very different than the one teachers have used in the past. Please give teachers time to get all of their settings adjusted and to enter grades. Part of the challenge is Schoology has been working on fixing a few bugs. If students have submitted all assignments, I would not worry about what the grade says now. This early in the school year, there may not be many scores in the grade book, so one missing assignment may have a significant impact on the grade. This will be remedied as more scores are entered. Students, if you are concerned about your teacher receiving assignments from you, please email your teacher to confirm that your work has been received. Give your teacher some time to update their grade book with scores.
There is a high temperature advisory for the next few days. Stay hydrated and be well.
Have a relaxing Labor Day weekend.
Mrs. Maria Jackson
