Friday, June 12, 2020 June 2020 Update OFFICE REOPENS MONDAY, AUGUST 3, 2020 9 AM CAMPUS IS CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC DUE TO COVID-19. CONSTRUCTION TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE SUMMER. Dear Vikings,
The year ended with a joyful celebration honoring the Class of 2020. The community and staff came out strong to cheer on the graduates. The car parade started at the Congregation Beth David parking lot and decorated cars lined up down Scully Ave. Families made their way to Lynbrook, and friends and family lined the streets, and staff met them at the finish line.
At the Senior Send-off days, graduates had the opportunity to have their picture taken after they received their diploma. The drive that students followed during the Send-off was decorated with balloons, posters, and festive flair. Thank you to the PTSA parent volunteers for your hard work and artistic vision. Those same parents returned to campus to add love and color to the entry of the student parking lot for Car Parade.
Moving to emergency remote learning was an unexpected challenge for staff and students. The teachers with a fast turn-around moved their classes online to keep students engaged and progressing in their studies. Students navigated the isolation of the shelter-in-place restrictions with ingenious determination. They used technology to stay connected to school and each other. There were class competitions on Instagram, many clubs kept meeting, and students found creative ways to give back to the community. Classwork was manageable and meaningful. I am very proud of our community for their flexibility, cooperation, and understanding. Skill-building on the 4Cs of Communication, Collaboration, Character, and Creative-Critical Thinking went completely online. Teachers learned to record video presentations, mastered Zoom, dove into Schoology, and met online with their colleagues. Students found new ways to communicate their learning, collaborated with their teachers and other students to demonstrate their knowledge, and students had time to explore their interests. We worked together to build a Lynbrook campus online.
There were bumps in the road and obstacles to tackle. We learned from our experiences, and we are making improvements. We learned that students were overwhelmed and confused by the many different online systems teachers were using. Next year, all teachers will be using Schoology as their information hub and launchpad for students. We will continue to use the Infinite Campus portal for attendance and grade reporting. Naviance will still be our college & career online system. To easily access all of these tools and to stay informed on the Lynbrook news, please make the Lynbrook Website (www.lhs.fuhsd.org) your homepage and go directly to your customized page Parents/ Students.
The schedule for next year is being finalized. We do expect to open the year with a more robust remote learning plan. As we all know, things can change quickly. We are working on a plan that will easily transition to campus when we are given clearance to return. When an official plan is in place, it will be shared with the entire FUHSD community.
This summer, let's all be sure to schedule some screen downtime. Parents are working from home. Students have been learning at home, and with COVID-19 socializing is virtual. Now, more than ever, we should schedule a time to unplug from technology. Let's give our brains a break from the relentless pull of the screens in our lives.
Have a wonderful summer. Stay safe. Stay healthy. Stay strong.
