CAASPP Bell Schedule - Lynbrook will be on a special bell schedule March 21-23 due to 11th grade CAASPP testing. Please check the schedule for special arrival times and locations for each grade. Juniors – remember to bring earbuds with a 3.5mm connector on Monday if you would like to use your own earbuds for CAASPP.

World of Flavors Week - March is National Nutrition Month and this year's theme from the CA Department of Education is Celebrate a World of Flavors. In support of honoring diversity through food, FUHSD Nutritional Services will be celebrating A World of Flavors Week March 21-25. During that week, culturally diverse food selections will be featured each day, and food service areas will be decorated with an international flair. Food selections will include Carnitas Burritos Bowls, Chicken Tikka Masala, Bahn Mi Pizza, Pesto Pizza, and much more.

Heritage India Faire & Purab Festival - Cupertino Bhubaneswar Sister City Initiative invites teachers, students, and parents to participate or volunteer at the Heritage India Faire & Purab Fest sponsored by Amazon at Memorial Park on March 26th from 11 am - 7 pm. The Festival will showcase arts, culture, trade, education exchange immersion program, and unique performances of all dance genres and dance forms from the States in Eastern and North Eastern India. The Festival is open to all and is a celebration of Cupertino's sister city relationship with Bhubaneswar, Odisha. As part of the sister city exchange program, the Festival educates and celebrates mutual understanding of diverse cultures promoting people to people friendships. The Festival is seeking High School student volunteers and will be providing certificates to the students. The Epic - Lynbrook's award-winning newspaper, the Epic, is accepting new staff applications for the 2022-23 school year. Interested students should view the application at bit.ly/epicapp2022 and request a recommendation from their English teacher. Applications are due by Wednesday, March 30th at 3:45 pm.

Opportunity Fair - All students are invited to attend the Lynbrook Opportunity Fair on Friday, April 1st, from 10:35-11:30 am in the Quad. This fair will host employers with jobs, summer programs, and academic/career opportunities for all grades.

Spiritwear Design Competition - Lynbrook Athletic Boosters is having a school-wide design competition for next year's apparel. Submissions should be original, include "Lynbrook" in the design, and be able to be printed in school colors. The winning designer will receive a $100 Amazon gift card and a hoodie with the winning design on it. Submissions close April 1st. Submit designs and questions to jmc02@sbcglobal.net.

Valhalla Yearbook - Valhalla yearbook staff member applications are now open for the 2022-23 school year. Valhalla is a yearlong class dedicated to documenting events, large and small, to create an enchanting yearbook for students. Valhalla is looking for passionate individuals who are willing to learn, no matter the experience level. Valkyries Dance Team Tryouts - Tryouts for the 2022-2023 'Valkyries' dance team will take place April 4-9. Audition packets can be found in the front office and on the Valkyries website. Contact lhsvalkyriescoach@gmail.com with any questions regarding the audition process.

Homework Center - On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays students can come to the Library after school to work on homework. Student tutors are available from 3:30-5:00 pm.

STTAR Tutor Program - Students, was your grade in an academic class not as high as you had hoped? Consider requesting a STTAR Tutor now to help you this semester. Besides reviewing course material, a STTAR tutor can help you with organization and could also help you improve your study skills. Congratulations

Speech & Debate - Congratulations to Ayush Sharma and Govind Malasani who are attending the National Parliamentary Debate League (NDPL) 2022 Tournament of Champions (TOC), which will feature seven preliminary rounds of parliamentary debate, followed by elimination rounds. NPDL-TOC brings together the most successful high school parliamentary debaters in the United States for the premier tournament of the year. This is the first time a Lynbrook Parliamentary team has qualified to participate. Good luck Ayush & Govind!

Lynbrook Employees of the Year 2022- We are very fortunate to have a staff of outstanding professionals to serve our students. They have dedicated their careers to educating, supporting, and inspiring young people. Each year students, parents and staff members are given the opportunity to nominate one certificated and on classified staff member for the honor of Lynbrook Employee of the Year. This year, approximately 150 submitted nominations. It is my pleasure to announce that Ms. Elizabeth Louie is this year's Lynbrook Certificated Employee of the Year and Mr. Ronald Choi is Lynbrook's Classified Employee of the Year! Ms. Louie is the World Language Department Lead. She teaches French and Engage, and she oversees the very active French Club. One student shared, "she's a really great teacher and makes everyone in her classes feel comfortable and supported and just creates an inviting environment to look forward to." Mr. Ronald Choi is one of our night custodians. Ronald is a fountain of positivity amd has poured kindness on everyone he meets for the 11 years he has worked at Lynbrook. One person described Ronald, "He is SO SWEET! I always see him after cheer practice and he's always helping our team!"

Brief COVID Update

At Lynbrook, we had just one positive case of COVID-19 this week. Santa Clara County Public Health reports that the three metrics for the relaxing of the indoor masking mandate are still holding.

Almost 85% of residents have been fully vaccinated.
Hospitalization rates are low and stable.
Case rates continue to decline.

Reasons to try your best on the CAASPP State Testing

Pride: Do well because you can do well! Take pride in yourself and in your school.
Recognition: Achievement on the CAASPP can open doors to special recognition upon graduation, such as the State Seal of Biliteracy, Golden State Merit Diploma, and FUHSD CTE Certificate of Completion.
Advancement: CAASPP testing data is used as part of the ranking formula for Newsweek Best High Schools Ranking and the CA School Dashboard, which is used by schools and universities to give context to our school's performance. CAASPP scores can also be used as part of the CSU's Early Assessment Program to exempt you from needing prerequisite math and English classes.

Juniors, make sure you know where to go on Monday morning for testing. Check the room assignments here

Construction Update

All the fences are down and the walkway between the GSS and theater is completely open to the gym and quad. There are a few features that are unfinished due to supply chain problems. By the end of May we will have the screen in place to hide the air conditioning compressors and the string lights over the outdoor seating area will be strung.

The old office will be razed in June to make way for the new two-story science building. It will be open for classes in August 2023. The planning for classroom modernization of the main campus is underway. The project will be completed in three stages. It will begin in the 300 Wing in the summer of 2023 and be completed by October 2023. The 000 Wing will start in October 2023 with an estimated completion of February 2024. The 400 Wing will start in February 2024 and be completed by June 2024. Phase 2 will be faster with a May-August 2024 construction schedule. Phase 3 will span January -August 2025. If all the stars align, the main campus modernization will be complete by August 2025.

I will keep this note about the new 2022-23 schedule in the newsletter for the next few weeks. I want to make sure everyone is aware of the upcoming change. It will have an impact on how one plans activities after school.

Senate Bill 328 Requires New Bell Schedule in August 2022

California will become the first state to require later start times in response to medical research that shows most teens are sleep deprived as a result of changes to their biological clocks that prevent them from going to sleep early (EdSource).

As mandated in Senate Bill 328, starting next school year. public high schools cannot begin classes before 8:30 AM. The teachers and district leaders worked together to design a bell schedule to meet the requirements of the law and the FUHSD Collective Bargaining Agreement.

All five high school in the district will be on the same schedule. The schedule will have four block days and three tutorials/advisories.
