Dear FUHSD parents and families,
We are writing to provide you with information regarding a serious situation that occurred today on Homestead High School's campus. The Homestead administrative team received a tip from a community member that one of our students was in possession of a gun. As soon as we learned of this situation, we immediately contacted the Sheriff's Office, who arrived within minutes to isolate the student.
Our law enforcement partners worked quickly to address this potential threat to the safety of our students, staff and the Homestead campus, and to detain the student involved. We understand that any situation where a weapon is found on a student will naturally cause concern and anxiety. We want to reassure you that there is no current threat to the safety of our school or district community. However, while law enforcement has assured us that there is no current threat, we have decided to ask them to have a presence on the Homestead campus to ensure that all students and staff feel comfortable returning to school. Our mental health team will be available to support students and staff who may need to speak to someone about the emotions they are experiencing around this situation.
We greatly appreciate our local law enforcement agencies who took this situation seriously and worked closely with us to take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our entire school community. We also want to commend the community member that came forward to trusted adults on campus with critical information and whose quick thinking helped ensure the safety of all students and staff. It is an important reminder to everyone in our school community that if you see or hear something, say something.
As we continue our return to full, in-person instruction, the safety of students and staff remains our top priority. Thank you for your support of our students and schools.
Sincerely,
Polly Bove Superintendent
