Voluntary Vaccination Submission On August 25, 2021, the district office sent a, "Voluntary Request for Student Vaccination Information" When we learn of a student or staff member with a positive COVID-19 test result we must notify any close contacts. In order to continue to streamline our contact tracing and reporting process, we are asking families to voluntarily share information on the vaccination status of their child(ren). Having this information included in a student's file will help us to expedite communication if and when a student is identified as a close contact. Each family was sent one Informed K12 form per child, requesting student vaccination information.
Note from Principal Jackson
Hello, Lynbrook,
Tomorrow is September 11, 2021. It has been 20 years since four hijacked planes slammed a hole in the heart of our country. Commercial airplanes full of innocent people destroyed the World Trade Center in New York City. A third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in an open field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. None of our students were alive to witness the horror in real-time, but the adults on staff have vivid memories of the terrible day and the weeks of unfolding grief as we learned of those who perished. These dark days were lighted with stories of heroism, compassion and unity.
High school students have grown up in a post-9/11 world. For them, 9/11 is a historical event, not a personal moment of shock and tragedy. Much has changed in the world because of 9/11. The nation was on high alert. Privacy laws changed with the Patriot Act. The Department of Homeland Security was established. We lived for nine years with hypervigilance and color-coded alerts. Airport travel changed the Internet, and cellphone calls still continuously scanned for terrorist "chatter." The U.S. invaded Afghanistan, and we fought a war with Iraq. This is the only world anyone under 25 knows.
History is important and complex. George Santayana, philosopher, poet, and Harvard professor of the late 1800s, wrote, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." It is essential that we know our history and examine its multifarious twisted motives and magnanimous movements. The links below will help students learn and help adults remember the shock of 9/11 and how it still reverberates through the world.
The Smithsonian created a Learning Lab collection, which contains images, text, and other multimedia resources. The creators provide these resources to the public and encourage people to ponder, "Where does 9/11 lie in our national memory? Is it a recent event or history?" This collection includes video footage and stories of the people who survived and responded to the emergency. NPR has a Special Series: The 20th Anniversary Of The 9/11 Attacks. The Associated Press explores the lasting effects of the attacks in their 9/11: A World Changed video. CNN has a ten-minute video that revisits the events of that morning. 20 Years Ago | September 10, 2021. Take some time to learn and reflect.
