COVID Cases and Deaths Dashboard

This dashboard provides data about new cases of COVID and related deaths over time among individuals living in Santa Clara County. Data also includes demographic information such as age, gender and race/ethnicity. One of the core areas of work in the Public Health Department is ensuring racial and health equity, understanding the social determinants of health, and how they impact health and health outcomes. Providing detailed demographic breakdowns enable the Public Health Department to determine appropriate actions to better prevent, control and slow the spread of COVID.

Data on cases are updated Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Data on deaths are updated Fridays.

About This Dashboard

Please note: The most reliable method to track the presence of COVID in the community is through wastewater data. COVID case data is no longer as reliable a metric due to significant decreases in lab-based testing.

A "case" is defined here as an individual who tests positive for COVID using specimen testing performed in a lab. Cases are reported by the date that the specimen was collected for testing. The 7-day rolling average of new cases is the number of new cases each day in the prior seven days.

Demographics of COVID cases, including age group, gender and race/ethnicity, can be viewed by cumulative COVID cases, or COVID cases that have occurred in the last 90 days.

For death data after December 31, 2022, Santa Clara County uses Provisional Deaths from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) National Vital Statistics System (NVSS). Data is provided by the California Department of Public Health. Prior to January 1, 2023, death data was sourced from the California Reportable Disease Information Exchange (CalREDIE).

The change in data source occurred in September 2023 and was applied retroactively to all 2023 data to provide a consistent source of death data for the year of 2023.

Demographics of COVID deaths, including age group, gender, and race/ethnicity, can be viewed by cumulative COVID-related deaths, or COVID-related deaths that have occurred in the last 120 days.
