On this day in 1965, about a week after a civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, was halted due to violent opposition, U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson delivered his We Shall Overcome speech, in which he introduced voting rights legislation that was passed later that year.  In his speech, Johnson identified the clash in Selma as a turning point in U.S. history akin to the Battles of Lexington and Concord in the American Revolution.  Johnson said “Their cause must be our cause too.  Because it is not just Negroes, but really it is all of us, who must overcome the crippling legacy of bigotry and injustice.  And we shall overcome.”
