News Bulletin

On this day in 1964, after 12 days of debate and voting, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by a vote of 290-130.  Democratic President Lyndon Johnson made passage of the bill his top priority during the first year of his administration.  The legislation provided federal protections for Blacks and other people of color in several areas including voting, public accommodations and facilities, employment and school desegregation.  The U.S. Senate passed the measure on June 19, 1964 with a vote of 73 -27.  President Johnson signed the legislation on July 2, 1964.  The 1964 Civil Rights Act is considered the nation’s most important civil rights legislation since Reconstruction.
