On this day in 1850, California became the 31st state in the union after being a part of the United States for less than two years. Mexico had reluctantly ceded California and much of its northern territory to the United States in the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Most newly acquired regions of the U.S. went through long periods as territories before they had the 60,000 inhabitants needed to achieve statehood, and prior to the Gold Rush, emigration to California had been so slow that it would have been decades before the population reached that number. But with the gold fever reaching epidemic proportions around the world, more than 60,000 people came to California alone. Faced with such rapid growth, Congress allowed California to jump straight to full statehood without ever passing through the formal territorial stage.

Make Up Picture Day - Make-up picture day is Monday, September 21 from 8:30 am – 2 pm in the Theater lobby. If you still have not taken your picture for the yearbook, please feel free to come during brunch, tutorial, or during a free period that day. It is the LAST opportunity to get your photo taken for the yearbook.
Homework Center – The Homework Center is open in the library Mondays through Thursdays, after school until 5:00 pm. Students can work on their assignments. Student tutors will be available starting mid-September. Attending the Homework Center can help students build healthy study habits for a successful year! Heart Screening for Athletes – On September 26, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, at Homestead High School, the Kyle J. Taylor Foundation will be providing on campus heart screening for all FUHSD athletes.
