On this day in 1940Hattie McDaniel became the first African American to win an Oscar.  She won for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Mammy in “Gone with the Wind” at the 12th Academy Awards. McDaniels was an American actress, singer-songwriter, and comedienne.  She has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1975, and in 2006 became the first Black Oscar winner honored with a U.S. postage stamp.  In addition to acting, McDaniel was a radio performer and television personality.  She was the first Black woman to sing on radio in the United States.  Although she appeared in more than 300 films, she received on-screen credits for only 83.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Job Shadow Mandatory Orientation – If you received an assignment for Job Shadow, you must attend the mandatory orientation next Wednesday, March 6 at tutorial in the auditorium. You will not be able to go to your Job Shadow assignment unless you attend the mandatory orientation. Bring your student ID and be on time, as no late entries will be allowed. Email lhsjobshadow@gmail.com if you have any questions. 

Coffeehouse Talent Show - Hey Lynbrook, Coming up this FRIDAY is our annual Coffeehouse Talent Show. Come out to the cafeteria from 7-10 PM to support your peers as they showcase acts from singing to dancing to comedy, while enjoying common café snacks and drinks. Attending is free, just remember to bring your student id! We hope to see you there (and maybe even performing during the Open Mic half of the show!)

SPORTS:

Girls Basketball – The majority of you missed your Varsity girls' basketball squad beat Ripon Christian yesterday in the first round of NorCal playoffs 68-53.  Junior Sarah Wei was the player of the game with 30 points on 10 three pointers.  Yes, that's right 10 THREE POINTERS.  A new school record!  Maggie Lam also chipped in a light 19 points with 5 three pointers.  Good thing you have a chance to witness greatness again tomorrow, Thursday, HERE AT HOME vs. Crystal Springs at 7pm.  Your Varsity Girls team is on the road to state finals and need your support!

Lynbrook Boys Golf - On Monday at the SCVAL Golf Showdown Tournament, Junior Adithya Venkataraghavan tied for 1st place after 18 holes with a 3 under 69.  In a tie breaking hole, Adithiya beat out Alexander Thule from Gunn to take first place.  Congratulations to Adithya.  The team took first place in the Fremont Union High School District.  The trophy will be on display for one year and then the Vikings will have to defend the trophy next year to keep it.

Cheerleading Tryouts - Lynbrook Cheerleading will have tryouts for next school year on March 5th, 7th and 8th. These tryouts will be held in the cafe from 6:30-8:30 pm. If you are interested in joining make sure to fill out the RSVP form linked in the Lynbrook cheer instagram page, all students are invited to join.
