On this day in 1918, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson signed the Standard Time Act, which established Daylight Saving Time in the United States; the legislation also gave the federal government oversight of the country’s time zones. It defined five time zones for the continental United States and authorized the interstate Commerce Commission to define the limits of each time zone. It also dictated on the last Sunday of March each year the clock be advanced an hour and then returned an hour on the last Sunday of October of that same year. This Act was initially intended to conserve fuel during World War I.
