News Bulletin

On this day in 1848, U.S. President James Polk confirmed the discovery of gold in California through his State of the Union address, officially kicking off the Californian gold rush.  From 1848 to 1855, 300,000 gold speculators (known today as the ’49ers) would find themselves in California, originating from elsewhere in America and all over the world.  From the massive population influx into California, San Francisco transformed from a sleepy town on the Bay with a population of 200 in 1846 to a bustling boomtown of 36,000 by 1852.
