News Bulletin

On this day in 1820, the first organized immigration of freed slaves to Africa departed from New York.  The “Mayflower of Liberia” and its 86 passengers, set sail to Freetown, the British colony of Sierra Leone, in West Africa. Freetown welcomed free African Americans as well as fugitive slaves.  A year later, in 1821, the American Colonization Society founded the colony of Liberia, just south of Sierra Leone.  It became a homeland for freed U.S. slaves outside of British rule.  The Mayflower of Liberia eventually brought more than 15,000 former slaves and other Americans of African descent rescued from illegal slave ships to join Liberia.  Today, about 5% of Liberia’s population descends from American freedmen and women.
